Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra is excited to bring together an exhibition of work from abstract painters Michelle Armas, Denise Choppin, Christina Foard, and Shawn Meharg.  Please join us for an Opening Artists' Reception on Friday, February 8th from 5:30 pm until 8:30 pm.  The exhibition will feature four distinct viewpoints of contemporary abstraction.

Stellers Gallery at Ponte Vedra owner, Hillary Tuttle, wanted to bring the work of these artists together for some time.  "Each artist's work is dynamic in its own way and I love that we are showcasing four distinct points of view.  What is really great about the work is that these artists have such a strong sense of color.  They are really interested in having their paintings connect with the viewer through their choices in palette.  This show is going to have a terrific energy to it."

Artist Michelle Armas is based in Atlanta. "I paint what I want to look at while building layers, texture and pattern. Graffiti and ethnic woven textiles inspire my work. When I paint I think about what it's like to move around the canvas, and lately a lot of the names for my paintings are song lyrics," said Armas. Armas paints large and small abstracts, working with both acrylic and oil paints.

Denise Choppin is based in Tallahassee and creates works of art that invoke the power and beauty of the natural world. Her landscape and horizon series conveys the emotional experience of light over time and terrain with the sense of tranquility and hopefulness that light suggests. Choppin repeatedly builds up a surface with acrylic glazing, periodically scraping back to reveal older layers. Rather than attempt to recreate faithful representations of the scenes that inspire her, Choppin's recent works explore the dynamic tension between representation and abstraction to capture an evocative essence.

Christina Foard is based in Jacksonville and paints landscape scenes as an exercise to re-experience and reframe formative memories. Her most recent works are abstractions of water and rocks, a part of a long-term exploration of erosive processes. Foard's work has been featured in 25 exhibitions in the past four years, and 2012 exhibitions included The Cummer Museum, Jacksonville University, Florida State College, and Jacksonville International Airport. Foard's work was recently acquired by The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens as part of their permanent collection.

Shawn Meharg is also based in Jacksonville. For more than fifteen years, Meharg has worked in the entertainment industry as a scenic artist and designer. In 2001, his focus changed to fine art. His work displays a diversity of style and subject, all involving the reflection and absorption of light. By subtle changes in context or the physical characteristics of an otherwise simple subject, Meharg aspires to elevate object to a symbol. Meharg's work is rendered with a focus on physical change over time, which may occur over many years or in a rapid moment, beckoning both an imagined past and an often precarious future.
